Gabon's Aaron Boupendza set for Zamalek move after MLS departure

Gabonese forward Aaron Boupendza is set to join Egyptian giants Zamalek as a free agent on a three-year deal.

Boupendza, 28, last played for MLS club FC Cincinnati, scoring twice in 14 games this season, before getting released last month.

He has now signed a preliminary contract with Zamalek and is set to arrive in Cairo in the upcoming few days for the official transfer announcement.

Valued at €5m by Transfermarkt, Boupendza will become Zamalek’s second summer signing after AS Saint-Étienne’s Mahmoud Bentayg.

Boupendza can line up anywhere in the front line whether as a striker or on the wings, bringing a much-needed versatility to the Zamalek squad.

The Gabonese international began his career at Gabonsese side CF Mouanana, before leaving for Europe in 2016 to play in France for Bordeaux, Pau FC, Ajaccio, and Tours FC.

A spell in Portugal with Feirense followed, while also playing for Turkish club Hatayspor, Qatari outfit Al-Arabi, and Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab before his move to the MLS.

All in all, Boupendza played in 190 career club games scoring 78 goals and assisting 18. He also has 35 games for the Gabonese National team during which he scored eight goals.
