Zamalek agree deal with Moroccan striker Karim El Berkaoui

Zamalek have reached an agreement to sign Moroccan striker Karim El Berkaoui on a free transfer this summer.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract expired with Saudi club Al-Raed earlier this summer.

Negotiations are advancing between Zamalek and El Berkaoui and he is now expected to arrive in Cairo in the next few days to finalize the deal.

El Berkaoui played for Al-Raed for the previous four seasons, joining them in 2020 from Hassania D’Agadir, where he started his career.

During his time in Saudi Arabia, El Berkaoui scored 51 goals and provided seven assists in 106 games, and previously scored 47 goals in 149 games in Morocco.

Karim El Berkaoui is the second Moroccan on the verge of joining Zamalek alongside Saint-Étienne’s full-back Mahmoud Bentayg, who is set to join on a season-long loan.

Zamalek had a disastrous last season, finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League, losing the 2022 Egypt Cup final to Al Ahly, while also getting knocked out of the 2022/23 Egypt Cup round of 16 by El-Gaish.

On a positive note, the club won the CAF Confederations Cup and will hope to retain their African title while mounting a serious challenge for the domestic trophies.
