Steven Gerrard: Ettifaq won't show mercy this season

English manager Steven Gerrard has promised Ettifaq fans an unmerciful team after winning the opening game against Al-Shabab.

Ettifaq started the season on the right foot with a massive 1-0 away win against Al-Shabab, thanks to Moussa Dembele’s 74th-minute winner.

The Saudi club finished last season in sixth place and Gerrard promised the fans a better showing this season.

Speaking on the Al-Shabab win, Gerrard said: “The conditions were tough due to the high heat and long grass, which affected our performance, but I’m happy with the win despite many players not being fully physically ready.

“The result is very important. As the weather improves and the team reaches 100% readiness, we’ll see a better team that won’t show mercy on the pitch.

“There were opportunities today and transitions where we could have scored, but we’re waiting to reach full readiness to perform better.

“I don’t want to go into too much detail about player substitutions. As for the defensive side, the entire backline was Saudi, and they performed excellently.

“We also achieved our first clean sheet with our new goalkeeper.”
