Emirati giants Al Jazira Club have announced the signing of Egypt international Mohamed Elneny following his departure from Arsenal.
Elneny has been without a club after his contract with Arsenal came to an end last summer, putting an end to his eight-year span at the Emirates.
The 32-year-old is currently the leading Egypt U23 national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, putting in impressive performances in their opening two games against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan.
Several Turkish clubs were said to be interested in Elneny’s services, but the player opted to make a return to the Middle East, signing for Al Jazira on a free transfer.
The announcement was made by the Emirati club during Egypt’s clash with Spain at the Olympics, the game which Elneny started and so far leading the Pharaohs to a historic win.
Elneny becomes the club’s third summer signing after Mohamed Atiq and Brazilian left-back Vitor Vargas as the club wants to build on their eighth-place finish last season.
The club is coached by French manager Grégory Dufrennes and have several well-known players, including Ex-Man City and Netherlands defender Karim Rekik and 2020 MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo.
Ex-Brazil international Fernando is also part of the squad as well as former Fulham players Neeskens Kebano and Aboubakar Kamara.
Elneny will join after completing his participation with Egypt in the 2024 Paris Olympics which is set to continue as the Young Pharaohs qualified for the quarterfinals, set to be played on Friday, August 2.
