Mostafa Fathi has expressed his delight following his winning goal against Ethiopia, insisting Egypt play only to win.
The Pharaohs concluded their AFCON qualifiers on a high after beating Ethiopia 1-0 at home, thanks to Mostafa Fathi’s first-half strike.
Fathi was Egypt’s best player on the pitch and his performance was rewarded with a goal on his 20th cap, having also scored in the friendly win against South Sudan last June.
Speaking of the win, Fathi said: “We succeeded in topping the group. We had already secured qualification, but we are Egypt and we play every match to win.
“I do what needs to be done at the club or the national team.
“In the end, to play or not is the coach’s decision, as he chooses the most suitable players for his style, and I am under the national team’s command.”
Regarding Ethiopia’s danger during certain periods of the match, he said, “These are the conditions of football matches, and it’s natural for fluctuations to occur in football.
“The Tunisia match is a friendly, but it is important. We want to finish the international break on a high.
“We take things one step at a time. Now we have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, and I am not the one to speak about the Egyptian national team; it is well-known throughout the continent. Every tournament, we play to win it.”
