Zamalek put one foot in Confederation Cup semis

Zamalek have put one foot in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals after beating local rivals Modern Future 2-1.

The first-leg was played at El-Salam Stadium, considered Modern Future’s home turf, which made the win even more valuable for the Whites.

However, it was Modern Future who took the lead in the 35th minute through Zamalek loanee Ali Yasser following a quick counter attack that saw the latter beat Mohamed Awad from close range.

With just seconds left on the half-time whistle, Hamza Mathlouthi equalised for Zamalek with a header from Ahmed Sayed Zizo’s corner to make it 1-1.

The second half saw Zizo miss a clear one-on-chance before Ahmed Atef also missed a huge chance from Modern Future as his effort hit the post.

As the game was heading to a draw, Seifeddine Jaziri earned Zamalek a penalty following a howler from Mohamed Rabia for Zizo to step up and score the winning goal from the spot in the 84th minute.

The second-leg will now take place at the Cairo International Stadium on April 7 and any other result than Future winning by a two-goal margin will see Zamalek secure a spot in the semi-finals.
