OFFICIAL: Rogério Micale named Egypt U-23 national team manager

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have announced the appointment of Brazil’s Rogério Micale as the new head coach of the Egyptian U-23 national team.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have been on the lookout for a manager to take on the vacant coaching role with the U-23 team.

Juan Carlos Garrido, Patrice Beaumelle, and Yannick Ferrera were all linked with the role, but negotiations broke down with the first two, while the latter’s move never materialised.

Instead, the EFA have decided to go for Brazilian manager Rogério Micale, who had led Brazil to their first-ever gold medal after defeating Germany on penalties at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The 53-year-old had arrived in Egypt just a few days ago to sign his contracts before the EFA officially announced the news on Sunday afternoon.

Rogério Micale has put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract, which will keep him at the helm of the Young Pharaohs until the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Micale’s most recent stint was at Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal during the 2020/21 season where he led the team for 13 games before departing the country after just three months in charge.

Before his time in Saudi Arabia, Micale had spent all of his managerial career in Brazil, taking charge of the likes of Atlético Mineiro, Paraná, and Figueirense FC to name a few.

Retiring from playing at the age of just 23, Micale spent the vast majority of his career in charge of youth sides, before taking over Brazil U-20s in May 2015, whom he led to second place in the 2015 U-20 World Cup.

Despite his successes with the youth teams of Brazil, Micale was sacked by the CBF after failing to qualify the U20s for the 2017 U-20 World Cup.
