Steven Gerrard makes history as Ettifaq beat Al-Tai in seven-goal thriller

Steven Gerrard has become the most English manager with wins in the Saudi Pro League history after leading Ettifaq to a breathtaking win over Al-Tai.

Ettifaq had a flying start to the season, ahead of the Al-Tai clash, winning four of their opening six games to sit fifth.

They managed to extend their winning run even more after a last-minute win over Al-Tai at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam.

In his only second appearance for Ettifaq, Georginio Wijnaldum managed to score his first goal in Saudi Arabia after less than two minutes in.

Ghanaian midfielder Bernard Mensah went to score twice in the first half to put his side ahead before Moussa Dembele made it 2-2 from Jordan Henderson’s assist.

Nine minutes after the break, Bernard Mensah completed his hattrick, but 72nd-minute equaliser from Georginio Wijnaldum, before a 93rd-minute winner from Moussa Dembele saw Ettifaq claim all three points.

With five wins to his name, Gerrard has now overtaken former Al-Taawoun boss Nestor El Maestro as the most Englishman with managerial wins in the Saudi Pro League history.

The win moved Ettiaq up to third place, only one point behind league leaders Al-Hilal, who fell to a 1-1 draw against Tarek Hamed’s Damac FC.
