Ahmed Elgendy wins Egypt’s first silver medal in the Modern Pentathlon

Ahmed Elgendy has won Egypt’s first silver medal at 2020 Tokyo Olympics after finishing in second place in the Modern Pentathlon event.

The Modern Pentathlon consists of five events: épée fencing, 200 meter freestyle swimming, showjumping and laser run (which includes running and shooting).

The event started last Thursday with fencing, where Elgendy managed to gather 208 points to sit in 15th place.

The remaining events started on Saturday, starting with the 200m freestyle where he finished fifth in his heat with 316 points.

With 284 points in the showjumping event, Elgendy seemed to be on his way to a mid-table finish. However, an impressive comeback in the laser run saw him win 668 points to finish second. Elgendy’s shooting time was 35.75 and he completed his run in 9:56.72.

Thanks to that impressive finish to the event, Elgendy has a total of 1477 points, which puts him in second place in the overall ranking behind Great Britain’s Joseph Choong and ahead of Woongtae Jun of South Korea.

This marks Egypt’s fifth medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the first silver medal, as the previous four were bronze.
