Al-Shabab reach agreement to sign Spain defender Mario Hermoso

Former Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso is set to join Saudi club Al-Shabab after agreeing terms with the Al Riyadh-based club.

According to Saudi publication Ariyadhiah, Hermoso will sign a two-year deal with Al-Shabab that will see him earn €16m during his stay in Saudi Arabia.

Hermoso is currently without a club after his contract with Atletico Madrid expired earlier this summer, putting an end to his five-year stay at the Metropolitano.

The 29-year-old had joined Atletico Madrid for €25m from Espanyol in 2019, making 174 appearances under Diego Simeone, scoring ten goals and helping them win the 2021 LaLiga title.

With five Spain caps to his name, Hermoso will now become Al-Shabab’s seventh summer signing after deals for the likes of Giacomo Bonaventura and Abderrazak Hamdallah.

He is expected to replace Romain Saïss at centre-back after the Moroccan returned back to his parent club Al-Sadd after his loan spell expired. Al-Shabab also lost Brazilian defender Iago Santos to Shabab Al Ahli and Ivan Rakitic.

Coached by Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira, Al-Shabab is also linked with Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj and Watford defender Wesley Hoedt.
