Egypt FA defend U-20 head coach, deny Mohamed Salah influence

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) member Mohamed Barakat has denied allegations of Mohamed Salah influencing managerial decisions.

The Pharaohs are currently taking part in the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they were placed in Group A alongside Nigeria, Mozambique, and Senegal.

The opening game against Mozambique saw Egypt dominate but fail to find a breakthrough for 90 minutes as they were held to a goalless draw.

A disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nigeria followed days later in their second group game to put a dent in Egypt’s round of 16 qualification hopes.

“I will not defend Mahmoud Gaber because the national team have had a disastrous AFCON tournament so far,” Barakat told Al-Mehwar TV channel.

“But at the same time, they are still in it and have a chance to qualify for the next round. So, it is not right to talk about the coach’s future now.

“We keep hearing reports about Mahmoud Gaber coaching the youth team just because his son Omar Gaber is friends with Mohamed Salah.

“This is very disrespectful because Mahmoud Gaber is a very good coach, and the job he has done over the last two or three years is a testament to that,” he added.

Egypt will hope to turn their form around when they face Senegal in their final group game on Saturday, February 25th.
