Ahmed Elmohamady or “Elmo” as he was affectionately nicknamed by Sunderland fans, began his career as a forward but now strictly plays on the right-side of defense or midfield. After catching the attention of a number of European clubs with his displays for the Egyptian national team at the 2010 African Cup of Nations, he moved to Sunderland from ENPPI on a one-year loan for £500, 000 with an option to a 3-year extension. This option was taken up the following summer for £2 million, the highest transfer fee in history for a player from the Egyptian Premier League.
Elmohamady was a regular starter in his first season in Europe, made a total of 36 Premier League appearances with Sunderland. He played right-wing for the majority of the season, a more advanced role than he’s used to with the national team. Elmo was known for his immense speed, crossing ability and flashy dribbling with Egypt. Despite his frequent marauding runs down the wing for Sunderland, there was much room for improvement on his final delivery. Since Steve Bruce’s sacking, Elmo has lost his spot in the Sunderland squad. He hasn’t started a single game under Martin O’Neill, and only made a handful of substitute appearances. On August 30, 2012, Elmohamady signed for Egyptian-owned Hull City on a season-long loan.
Elmohamady features regularly with Egypt under Bob Bradley, where he’s commonly played as a right wing-back.
