Egypt falls in latest FIFA rankings after disastrous AFCON

FIFA announced on Thursday, the monthly ranking of national teams for February, following the conclusion of the recent AFCON and Asian Cup.

Egypt had suffered a disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after losing on penalties to DR Congo in the round of 16.

The Pharaohs had one of their worst AFCON campaigns in history after managing three back-to-back 2-2 draws in the group stages against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde respectively.

The results saw Egypt lose points in the FIFA rankings to drop to 36th globally, falling three places; however, they moved up to fourth in the CAF rankings.

The moving up came because both Tunisia and Algeria dropped down 13 places to sit 41st and 43rd respectively, having been ahead of Egypt before the AFCON, sitting 28th and 30th.

Meanwhile, Morocco moved up one spot and remained at top of the CAF rankings, sitting 12th, followed by Senegal (17th), who moved up three spots, and then Nigeria in 28th, who rose 14 places.

AFCON champions Ivory Coast moved up 10 spots to 39th worldwide, sitting behind Egypt in fifth place.

The biggest movers in Africa were Angola, whose run to the quarter-finals, saw them earn 70.06 points and move 24 places to sit 93rd instead of 117.
