Mabululu: Egypt's AFCON performance was catastrophic

Angolan striker Mabululu of Ittihad Alexandria believes that Egypt’s performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was catastrophic.

The 31-year-old had an AFCON to remember, scoring three goals for Angola, helping the team reach the quarter-finals, before losing eventual-runner-ups Nigeria.

Speaking on his campaign, Mabululu said: “We had a good performance in the Africa Cup of Nations and we had team spirit since the beginning of the tournament.

“Our defeat against Nigeria was a surprise, but we made a great effort to achieve the win.

“Egypt’s performance was catastrophic in Ivory Coast, not good at all, because typically Egypt reaches the final. Egypt’s participation wasn’t good.

“The Egyptian national team is strong, but things haven’t always gone well. They will review the tournament and change their mindset, and they will deliver better performances in upcoming competitions.

“I didn’t expect their exit from the Round of 16 because they usually reach the final and win the title, but this is football.

“We must continue working hard because Egypt is one of the strongest teams in Africa.

“Ivory Coast winning the title is not a surprise, especially since they have strong elements like the pitch and the fans, and they deserved to win the title in the end.

“I hope for the presence of the fans behind the team in the upcoming matches, as they are our main supporters, and their presence pleases us,” he concluded.
