Mido: 2023 AFCON is the worst for Egypt

Ahmed Hossam Mido has labelled Egypt’s 2023 AFCON campaign as the worst in recent history, stating that the FA must take lessons to improve in the future.

Egypt crashed out of the 2023 AFCON after a disappointing run of games where they failed to earn a win during 90 minutes of play.

The Pharaohs suffered three back-to-back 2-2 draws in the group stages against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde respectively before holding DR Congo to a 1-1 stalemate in the round of 16.

Speaking after the conclusion of the tournament, 2006 AFCON winner Mido said: “Since I became aware of football, this AFCON version is considered the worst for Egypt.

“If we repeat the mistakes, we will be foolish; we must take advantage of what happened to be a turning point.

“Any football association that does not have a clear project on the ground, this will be its end; any association that does not want to bring in specialists and wants to dominate the scene, this will be its end.

“Clear lessons for everyone, you don’t need to be a genius to know the problems in Egyptian football.

“The lesson of this tournament is that the next federation must have a real project and work on the ground, there must be transparency and clarity for the fans.”
