OFFICIAL: Ivory Coast sack manager Jean Louis Gasset despite AFCON chance

OFFICIAL: Ivory Coast sack manager Jean Louis Gasset midway through AFCON

Ivory Coast have parted ways with head coach Jean Louis Gasset despite still having a chance at reaching the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations knockout rounds.

Despite winning their opening game, Ivory Coast amassed just three points from their three group games and suffered a 4-0 humiliating defeat from Equatorial Guinea.

The hosts find themselves in an awkward position as they need Morocco to beat Zambia in the final matchday of group F to be able to qualify for the round of 16 as one of the third-best teams.

Despite still carrying a faint hope, the Ivorian Football Federation have decided to sack Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant due to ‘insufficient results’.

In the scenario where they do qualify, Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, will step in as interim for the rest of the tournament.

70-year-old Gasset took over the Ivorian national team in May 2022 and had suffered just two defeats prior to the AFCON kickoff.
