Long-serving Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango has officially announced that he has retired from international football setting an end to his career with the Ugandan national team.

Onyango played a pivotal role in helping Uganda qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 and is widely considered as one of the greatest players in the nation’s history.

The 35-year-old has a history of facing Egypt and Egyptian clubs in top tier African competitions. He has been assigned as Uganda captain for the past couple of years.

It is believed that Onyango took the decision to retire following Uganda’s failure to qualify for the upcoming 2020 AFCON which is set to be held in Cameroon.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from international football,” Onyango said.

“After much consideration, my family, managers and I, decided it was in my best interest to hang my gloves on my beloved Cranes. Big thanks to every Ugandan over the years.”

Onyango has 80 caps for the East African nation since making his senior international debut against Cape Verde in June 2005.

He is currently active for Mamelodi Sundowns at club level and has been playing for the club since summer 2011 for the South African giants.
