Ahmed Elmohamady’s Aston Villa have clinched promotion to the Premier League following a 2-1 victory over Derby County in the playoff final.
Having beaten Derby twice this season, Villa were able to overcome Derby County for the third time this season.
The first goal of the day came in the 44th minute after an excellent cross from Egypt international Ahmed Elmohamady, which Anwar El Ghazi turned into a goal and gave Aston Villa the lead.
Around 14 minutes into the second half, Villa successfully doubled their lead. El-Ghazi cut in from the left, tackle absent, and crosses the ball. After a big deflection, the ball drops inside the box, forcing Derby keeper Kelle Roos to come out. Roos was able to get a hand on the ball, however, he dropped it, and it then bounced off of McGinn’s body and went in.
In the 81st minute, substitute Martyn Waghorn gave Derby County a sight of hope when he converted Florian Jozefzoon’s long cross into a goal.
This, however, wasn’t enough to give derby county the score they needed for the promotion.

Seven-time First Divison winners Aston Villa are back in the Premier League for the first time in three years and next season will become their 25th in the Premier League.
They will join Norwich City and Sheffield United, who won automatic promotions earlier this season, and will replace the relegated Huddersfield Town, Fulham, and Cardiff City.
This promotion also is Elmohamady’s third after winning it twice during his time with Hull City and next season will be his sixth in the top tier after making 165 appearances in the Premier League for both Sunderland and the Tigers.
According to Deloitte, Aston Villa, having won the EFL Playoff, will be receiving around £170m across the next three seasons.
This is a combination of:
Extra revenue they will earn from playing in the Premier League in 2019/20 – at least an extra £95m, mostly from central distributions
Parachute payments in 2020/21 and 2021/22 should they be relegated after one season – totaling an estimated £75m across two seasons
It’s worth mentioning that Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris is the club’s chairman following the purchase of a 55% controlling stake by NSWE, a company jointly owned and controlled by Sawiris’ group NNS and American billionaire Wes Edens.
