OFFICIAL: Amro Tarek joins Austin FC on free transfer

Former Egypt international Amro Tarek has completed a free move to MLS outfit Austin FC just a few days after getting released by Al Masry.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Tarek moved to Egypt at an early age, settling in Asyut, where he started his career at Asyut Cement, before moving to ENPPI in 2009.

Tarek has then had several spells in Germany at the reserve sides of Magdeburg, Freiburg, and Wolfsburg, before returning to Egypt through El-Gouna in August of 2013.

Two years in Hurghada were followed by a surprising and short spell with Real Betis, which started a journeyman career for Tarek, who went on to represent Columbus Crew, ENPPI, Wadi Degla, Orlando City, New York Red Bulls, El-Gouna, and finally Al Masry.

Since joining Al Masry last September, Tarek made just seven appearances for the Port-said-based club, before seeing his contract terminated alongside Amr Marei just a few days ago.

However, it didn’t take Tarek long to find a new club as he was snapped up by MLS club Austin FC on a free transfer, the club announced on Friday night.

“I’m excited by the opportunity to play for Austin FC and to help the team toward its goal of winning trophies this season,” Tarek said on the move.

“Everything I have seen about the club, from the fans and the facilities to the players and the coaching staff, has been first-class, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m also very grateful to my former club, and for their understanding of my family situation and why this move made sense for me at this time. I look forward to getting started,” Tarek added.

News of the signing has also been welcomed by Austin FC Sporting Director Sean Rubio, who said: “We wish Tarek a warm welcome to the Club and to the city of Austin.

“Amro is an athletic, left-footed center back who adds another option to our talented group of defenders as we prepare to compete in four different competitions during the 2023 season,” Rubio added.

According to the club’s announcement, Tarek signed a one-year deal with Austin FC until the end of the 2023 season, with an option for a further year.
