Egyptian defender Amro Tarek has signed a new contract with MLS side New York Red Bulls, following a successful first season at the club.
Tarek joined New York Red Bulls last year from Orlando City, as he made 22 appearances for Orlando, scoring once in the MLS as the Florida side finished bottom of the Eastern Conference.
The 27-year-old was traded to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.
The former Real Betis man has made 22 appearances for the Red Bulls, scoring and assisting once in 2019, guiding them to the playoffs after finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference. However, their journey was cut short after losing to Philadelphia Union 4-3 on aggregate in the first round.
Tarek, who received the newcomer of the year award, has now signed a new contract with the MLS side keeping him at the club for another year.
Talking to the New York Red Bulls website, the club’s sporting director and head coach praised the Egyptian and talked of how important of an asset he is to the team.
“Amro fit in well with our team from the start, and was solid when called upon last season,” said Sporting Director Denis Hamlett.
“He’s a versatile defender, and his qualities fit well within our playing philosophy. Amro proved to be an important player for us and we’re pleased to extend his time with us into 2020 and beyond,” he added.
“Amro was an important player for us last year,” said Red Bulls head coach Chris Armas.
“Amro Tarek is a quality player, incredible person, and has fully committed himself to us. As a staff we’re pleased to have him in our defensive group and know that he is reliable in every way,” he continued
The former El-Gouna and Wadi Degla man recently revealed that he was close to signing with African giants Zamalek before the move fell through to his surprise.
