OFFICIAL: Ehab Galal named Egypt manager

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have announced the appointment of Ehab Galal as the newest Pharaohs manager following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

Just a few days ago, the EFA have announced the termination of Carlos Queiroz’s contract as the Egyptian national team manager after failing to reach an agreement.

During the past seven months, the Portuguese had led the Pharaohs to the semi-finals of the Arab Cup, before losing the AFCON final on penalties to Senegal, just a few weeks before repeating the same scenario in the final round of the World Cup qualifiers.

Overall, Queiroz won 13 games with the national team, drew in two, and suffered five defeats, two of which came in the Arab Cup.

While both sides wanted to renew the existing contract, they disagreed over the duration of it, which led to the departure of the renowned Portuguese coach.

After the news have emerged, multiple names surfaced as candidates for the job, including Ehab Galal, Hossam Hassan, Ali Maher, Vahid Halilhodžić, former coach Hector Cuper, and even managerial legend Hassan Shehata.

However, as the EFA confirmed that they will only consider Egyptians for the role, the list was narrowed down to only Hossam Hassan and Ehab Galal.

And it was Galal who was chosen by the EFA, having been so close to taking the job back in 2019 after the departure of Javier Aguirre, before it was given to Hossam El-Badry.

Galal will now leave his role as Pyramids FC manager, which he took back last September after a short stint with Ismaily.

This season, Pyramids have won 16 games, drew four, and lost three out of 23 in total among the Egyptian Premier League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Galal had also an unsuccessful stint with Zamalek back in 2018; however, his most notable time came with Misr El-Makkasa between 2014 and 2017.

The 54-year-old also lists Al Masry, ENPPI, Telephonaat Beni Suef, Kafr El-Sheikh. El-Hammam, Kahraba Ismailia, and Libyan side Al Ahli among his former employers.

Despite his long managerial career, Galal has never managed to win a trophy, with a second-place league finish with Misr El-Makkasa in 2017 being his biggest achievement.

Galal also now becomes the 17th Egyptian to lead the Pharaohs and the sixth since the turn of the new century after Mahmoud El Gohary, Mohsen Saleh, Hassan Shehata, Shawky Gharib, and Hossam El-Badry
