Ramadan Sobhi on relationship with Al Ahly fans, potential Zamalek move

Pyramids FC and Egypt forward, Ramadan Sobhi, spoke about his tense relationship with the Al Ahly fan base and if he could sign for Zamalek.

A product of Al Ahly’s academy, Sobhi made his debut with the first team at just 17 years of age and was regarded as the biggest talent of his generation in Egypt.

His performances earned him a move to the English Premier League where he spent two uneventful seasons with Stoke City and Huddersfield Town, before returning to his boyhood club on loan.

After two years with the Reds, the 25-year-old made a shocking move to sign for league rivals and then newly-founded Pyramids FC, where he spent the last two seasons.

Since joining Pyramids in 2020, Sobhi made 54 appearances across all competitions during which he scored 12 goals and provided nine assists.

His biggest accomplishment with the Blues so far was guiding them to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final last season, where they lost to eventual champions Raja Casablanca.

During their latest game against Al Ahly, several Reds fans were directing insults to Sobhi and attacking him for choosing money over his club.

The winger claims to not have noticed the incident during the game and that the Al Ahly fans don’t hate him.

“Having the support of the fans is great, but you have to give everything you have on the field. If all the fans are behind you and you continue to perform poorly, they will not continue to support you,” Sobhi told MBC Masr TV.

“The fans turned against me after leaving Al Ahly, but I don’t feel that they hate me, no matter what they do.

“I didn’t notice anything that happened during the Al Ahly match, my friends told me about it after the game and we joked about it.

“I’m committed to my contract with Pyramids, and my goal is to succeed within this club,” he added.

Sobhi was then asked whether he sold his career for money, to which he responded with the following:

“I haven’t done anything in my career compared to the legends in Al Ahly. I’m still 25 years old and have a long journey ahead of me.

“I saw a good project in Pyramids and a team that wanted to succeed and decided to join them and I don’t regret leaving.”

Sobhi was recently linked with a move to Cairo giants Zamalek, but says no one from the club contacted him. He also revealed which team he supports if Al Ahly and Zamalek face each other.

“I have not spoken to any Zamalek officials, I don’t know why this rumour is circulating. I’m fully focused with Pyramids,” he continued.

“I make my own decisions without anyone’s interference.

“If Al Ahly face Zamalek, who will I support? I will support Pyramids, I’m with another club now and this is my job.

“I will hope for a draw if this is in the best interest of Pyramids. If they play in Africa, I will support them, but not in the league, I must think about the interest of my team,” he concluded.
