EFA on renewing for Carlos Queiroz, replaying the Senegal game

Queiroz

Egypt FA (EFA) board member and head of the Professional Clubs’ Association, Amer Hussein, spoke the future of national team coach Carlos Queiroz.

In September of last year, Carlos Queiroz was appointed as Egypt’s national team manager after the dismissal of Hossam El-Badry.

Since then, he has led the Pharaohs to the semi-finals of the Arab Cup in Qatar and the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

He was also close to the 2022 World Cup qualification but his side was eliminated after losing to Senegal in a penalty shootout.

The 69-year-old resigned from his position after losing to the Teranga Lions, but the EFA are yet to accept his request.

According to Hussein, they are still considering whether or not to offer him a new contract and that a session was held with the Portuguese coach on Monday.

“A session was held yesterday between Queiroz, Gamal Allam, president of the federation, and Mohamed Barakat, during which they discussed all the issues that he met and the reasons for not qualifying for the World Cup,” Hussein told ONTime Sport 2 TV.

“They discussed the negatives, the plan for the future and his ideas for the coming period with the national team. All of this will be presented to us in the next meeting on Sunday.

“If there is no better option than him, he must continue. The man spent six months, which is a short period in football. So if we do not find a better coach and his ideas are convincing for us and he has a clear vision for the next period, he must continue.

Queiroz

“We have the Africa Cup of Nations in June 2023 and we want to prepare early. We should not sack a coach and appoint another after each defeat. But things must be clear to him, unlike when he was first appointed, when we were not in charge yet.

“We need to talk about this from the beginning. We don’t accept playing for the sake of qualifying for the World Cup only, but we want a strong team capable of playing football. We want to know his vision about the players he intends to build the team around, but building the team doesn’t mean not achieving results. We don’t want the honourable loss, we want a team that wins, scores and plays football.

“The fans are happy to see the team playing good football, even if they aren’t successful, like the generation of 2006, 2008 and 2010. It’s true they won three AFCONs, but we didn’t qualify for the World Cup.

“This session was held yesterday, as for issue regarding the conditions it dates back to a week ago. Everything that happened today will be presented at the Football Association meeting on Sunday,” he added.

Hussein then spoke about the possibility of replaying the controversial Senegal game.

“I can’t deceive people. I, as the head of the competitions committee for a long time and a person who knows the regulations well, know that it’s very difficult to replay any match,” he continued.

“What’s happening is that we’re taking a stand with different parties, such as the Sports Court to prove the situation and prevent a recurrence.

“Everyone should know that we are defending our rights, but replaying the match is very difficult,” he concluded.
