Tennis: Mayar Sherif exits Wimbledon in qualifying round

Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif was knocked out of the Wimbledon Grand Slam after losing to Germany’s Jule Niemeier in the second qualifying round.

Sherif burst onto the scene in 2020 after becoming the first Egyptian to qualify for the main draw of Roland Garros. The world number 117 had reached the first round before losing to Karolina Piskova.

In January 2021 then became the first Egyptian woman to compete in the Australian Open main draw after beating Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic in the qualifiers.

On the contrary to last year, the 25-year-old failed to reach the main draw of Roland Garros after losing in a hard-fought match against Jaqueline Cristian in the second qualifying round.

Now, after beating Romania’s Irina Fetecău in the first qualifying round of Wimbledon, Sherif lost 4-6 and 3-6 in the second qualifying round to Jule Niemeier from Germany.

Sherif recently moved to 117th place in the WTA ranking. In terms of Arab players ranking, Sherif comes second behind Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur who sits in 24th.
