REPORT: Arsenal not planning to offer Mohamed Elneny new contract

It has been reported in England that Premier League giants Arsenal are currently not prioritising handing Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny a new contract offer despite him being a reliable option for head coach Mikel Arteta.

Elneny was a regular in Arsenal’s lineup last season under Arteta as he played a total of 40 games with the Gunners this season, scoring three goals this season.

The 28-year-old started 22 games out of all the games he featured in, the thing which demonstrates Arteta’s trust in the Egypt international.

One of Elneny’s strikes came against Dundalk FC in the Europa League group stages, but the Gunners’ exited the competition in knockout stages later on.

The scorcher made the cut as one of the potential winners of Arsenal’s Goal of the Season award and eventually, the Egyptian came out victorious, having received 31% of the votes cast.

Despite his decent showings in the Gunners’ underwhelming 2020/21 season, the club is not expected to open talks for a new deal soon.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are not planning to offer a new contract to Elneny, even though the Egypt international’s contract expires next summer.

Furthermore, Arsenal are eyeing midfield signings this summer and that could force him down the pecking order, the report continues.

Elneny had joined Arsenal in January 2016 coming from Swiss giants FC Basel per the request of legendary coach Arsene Wenger.

Elneny spent a season-long loan spell at Turkish Super Lig powerhouse Besiktas in season 2019/20 and showed great displays that encouraged Arteta to bring him back to the mix in the following season.
