REPORT: Big blow for Egypt U-23 as star striker set to miss Olympics

Mostafa Mohamed

Sensational reports have emerged from Turkey regarding the participation of Egypt star Mostafa Mohamed along with the U-23 Egyptian national team in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, as Galatasaray and the Egyptian Football Association came to an agreement that Mohamed doesn’t take part.

Egypt is finalising preparation for the Tokyo Olympics as Shawky Gharib’s men qualified for the tournament after their U-23 AFCON triumph in 2019.

The Pharaohs were placed in Group C, aka Group of Death, alongside European champions Spain, Argentina, and Australia.

Mohamed played a vital role in the young Pharaohs’ success in the African showpiece event back in 2019 being the competition’s top scorer.

The 24-year-old striker was supposed to be an integral part of Gharib’s starting lineup in Tokyo this summer, but apparently, things will not be going as planned.

According to Turkish source CNN Turk, Galatasaray met with the EFA and it was agreed that Mohamed will be removed from the Pharaohs’ squad for the Olympics in order to be available for Fatih Terim’s team for their Champions League qualifying encounters.

The veteran Turkish manager called Mostafa Mohamed, the call which was followed by the player’s request to be dismissed from Egypt U-23 camp, adds the Turkish outlet.

Mohamed had an extraordinary debut season with Galatasaray, scoring nine goals across 17 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig and the Turkish Cup.

He almost led the Turkish giants to the league title; however, they lost the title by just one goal to arch-rivals Beşiktaş, and therefore they finished second.
