HANDBALL: Egypt appoint Spanish coach Juan Carlos Pastor

The Egyptian Handball Federation (EHF) announced that Spanish coach Juan Carlos Pastor has signed his contract to become the Pharaohs’ manager for a one-year deal.

The EHF decided to part ways with Roberto García Parrondo following the 2023 World Championship because he wasn’t fully dedicated to the Egyptian team due to his job at Germany’s Melsungen.

Parrondo will be succeeded by fellow countryman Pastor who will be tasked to win Egypt a medal in the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.

“Pastor has signed a one-year contract with the Federation till Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” Egyptian Handball Federation board member Amr Salah said in an official statement.

“Our target from signing Pastor is to win a medal in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris,”

Pastor’s first objective will be defending Egypt’s African Handball Championship title in the 26th edition which the Pharaohs host in January 2024.

The 2024 African Handball Championship will also act as the qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympic Games with the top three teams will represent Africa in the French capital.

Pastor has been the head coach of Hungary’s SC Pick Szeged since 2013 before his contract expires in the summer, as he guided them to win the Hungarian Premier League three times, the Hungarian Cup once, and the EHF European League once.

Moreover, the 54-year-old led Spain to the 2005 World Championship title during his four-year spell as the head coach between 2004-2008.

He also guided Spain to the silver medal at European Championship 2006 and the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
