Kovac explains decision to take off ‘disappointing’ Marmoush after 19 minutes

Wolfsburg manager Niko Kovac has revealed why he decided to substitute Omar Marmoush against Bochum on Saturday.

Kovac’s side cruised to a dominant 5-1 victory over Bochum at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion on matchday 29 of the Bundesliga.

A double from Mattias Svanberg and goals from Jakub Kaminski, Patrick Wimmer, and Luca Waldschmidt secured all three points for the visitors.

Omar Marmoush had started on the bench but was brought on at the start of the second half in place of goalscorer Patrick Wimmer.

However, the Egyptian’s night quickly ended as he lasted just 19 minutes on the pitch before he was called to the bench again.

“I have to act accordingly to make sure the team is playing at their best,” Kovac said in the press conference after the game.

“That’s why I took him [Marmoush] off because I wasn’t happy with his defensive performance.

“A player getting substituted after just 19 minutes is a rarity and it’s also the first time that I do it this way but I have to put the team first.

“It’s disappointing that I had to make this decision and I know he’s sad, maybe angry but it’s a maturing process,” he added.
