TENNIS: Mayar Sherif makes history, reach Madrid Open quarter-finals

Egypt’s Mayar Sherif has hit another milestone as she beat Elise Mertens to reach the quarter-finals of the 2023 Mutua Madrid Open.

The 2023 Madrid Open is currently being played at the Park Manzanares in Madrid, Spain from 25 April to 7 May 2023.

Ranked 59th in the WTA rankings, Egypt’s Mayar Sherif started the competition in the first round and had to beat Italy’s Camila Giorgi and Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine to reach the round of 32.

Mayar then recorded a historic win over World no.5 Caroline Garcia to reach the round of 16 of the 2023 Mutua Madrid Open.

In the next round against Belgium’s Elise Mertens, World No.24, the Egyptian backed up her win over Garcia, winning 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 to make her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

In her first main draw on clay at a WTA 1000 event, Mayar Sherif becomes the first player from Egypt to reach a WTA 1000 quarter-finals.

Sherif will now face either one of World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus or 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals
