Patrick Mabedi appointed as interim Malawi head coach

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) have named Patrick ‘General’ Mabedi as their new head coach on a short-term deal.

Malawi had recently parted ways with Romanian manager Mario Marinica after their 4-0 defeat to Egypt on home soil in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Flames are currently third in Group D with just three points and are in danger of missing out on qualification after four games played.

As a result, the FAM announced the appointment of former player Patrick Mabedi on an interim basis as he signed a contract that runs until the end of September.

“Mabedi will see the team through the two remaining 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Ethiopia in June and Guinea in September as well as the COSAFA Cup in May,” the FAM said in a statement.

“In the meantime, FAM will immediately embark on the process to recruit a full-time Flames head coach.”
