Future exit Confederation Cup as Pyramids qualify for quarter-finals

Pyramids have defeated local rivals Future FC 2-1 in the final round of the CAF Confederation Cup group stages on Sunday.

Future were handed a major boost heading into the game with CAF awarding them three points and a 3-0 win over ASKO Kara after handing the latter a $10,000 fine.

The win had placed Future top of their group temporarily with 10 points as AS FAR and Pyramids dropped to second and third respectively with eight points each.

Despite having momentum on their side, Future were unable to capitalise as they fell to a disappointing defeat against Pyramids.

Ali Gabr fired Pyramids into the lead after just 11 minutes of play as he pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box and struck it into the back of the net.

Pyramids continued to dominate and nearly doubled their advantage near the half-hour mark as Mostafa Fathi’s curler hit the post and was easily grabbed by Mahmoud Gennesh on the rebound.

Just five minutes into the second half, Pyramids skipper Abdullah El-Said made a stunning run and skipped past multiple Future defenders before slotting home their second goal of the evening.

Ahmed Atef’s late goal proved to be only a consolation as a defeat meant that Pyramids leapfrogged Future in Group C with 11 points.

To make matters worse, Morocco’s AS FAR drew 1-1 with ASKO and claimed the group’s top spot on goal difference condemning Future to third place in the process.
