Egypt handed boost as Guinea beat Ethiopia in AFCON qualifiers

Egypt are now top of their group following Guinea’s win over Ethiopia in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The 2023 AFCON qualifiers resumed last week during the current international break following a nine-month halt.

The Pharaohs returned to action and claimed a vital 2-0 victory against Malawi in Rui Vitoria’s first-ever official game in charge on Friday.

A well-constructed move finished off by Mohamed Salah gave Egypt the lead before Omar Marmoush’s deflected strike doubled their advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

The win propelled Egypt to the top of Group D temporarily before their status as group leaders was confirmed with Guinea’s 2-0 win over Ethiopia.

Egypt are set to travel to face Malawi in the AFCON qualifiers again on Tuesday, March 28th before the return of club football.
