Raja Club Athletic head coach Mondher Kebaier raised controversy when he recalled an unplayed game for Al Ahly as he looked for an inspirational comeback against the Red Devils.
The Moroccan side host Al Ahly at Mohammed V stadium in the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
The Red Devils are enjoying a 2-0 lead ahead of the second leg thanks to goals from Mohamed Abdel-Moneim and Hamdy Fathi.
The Tunisian manager expressed his confidence in his players’ ability to turn the tie around and advance to the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
However, Kebaier invoked Al Ahly’s unplayed game against Al Masry in the Egyptian League Cup as an example for the Red Devils’ recent heavy defeats.
“We understand how difficult the job is, but it is not impossible. Al Ahly lost 3-0 against Al Masry last March. In addition, they conceded five goals against Mamelodi Sundowns,” Kebaier said in the pre-match press conference.
Al Masry were handed an automatic 3-0 victory following Al Ahly’s withdrawal from the Egyptian League Cup due to fixture congestion.
“We managed to score 10 goals in the last three home games in the CAF Champions League. I think we are able to do what it takes to win the tie,”
“We know what happened in the first-leg. The second-leg will be at our home and in front of our fans. We have to start strongly in order to score and win,”
“It is important to take an early lead against Al Ahly. They always find difficulty when they concede. We missed a lot of chances in the first leg, but it will be a different case in front of our fans,”
