Esperance captain Chemmam: This Champions League title has special taste

Khalil Chemmam
Esperance de Tunisia captain Khalil Chemmam has praised his team for seeing off Al Ahly in Rades to win their third CAF Champions League title in history.

Chemmam, 31, started in an unfamiliar center-back position having been known to play on the left flank of Esperance’s defence for many years. He was one of the players to win Africa’s biggest club competition in 2011 and was on the losing side when his team were beaten by Al Ahly in the 2012 final.

“This win has a special taste, it came under difficult circumstances, we saw the events of the home match but the most important thing is that the player were focused, and did not think of what happened in the first match,” Chemmam said.

“It was a deserved win, congratulations to us, the fans and the president.”

Finally, the captain took the time to take a little dig at the Video Assistant Referee after one of the most controversial matches in the CAF Champions League final history ended with 3 goals to one in Cairo, with the referee going back to VAR to award three penalties in the first leg in Cairo.

“To conclude, let’s not go back to VAR,” Chemmam stated
