El-Badry: CAF Championships are decided by referees

Hossam El-Badry

Al Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry expressed his anger from the referee’s performance after his side’s 1-0 loss to Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League final.

The Red Devils failed to secure their 9th star after the 1-1 draw in Alexandria and the 1-0 loss in Casablanca thanks to Walid El Karti header in the 70th minute which clinched the second African title to the Moroccan club.

“I’ve always said that referees play a big role in deciding African titles. You don’t win titles in Africa by creating a strong team, refereeing became an important factor in results,” El-Badry told ON Sports Channel after the game.

“A clear penalty was not called for us and the Wydad’s goal was offside. It became very obvious that referees control the results of the games, even in the final,” he added.

“I told my players that they did everything to win and that it was out of our hands. I congratulated Hussein Amotta [Wydad coach] because what the referee did has nothing to do with football and the Moroccan coach,” the 57-year-old coach concluded.
