El-Shennawy: Egyptian fans are number one player of the team

Egypt international and Al Ahly goalkeeper, Mohamed El-Shennawy expressed his gratitude to the Egyptian fans backing the national team in the AFCON.

The 30-year-old produced a number of fine saves to help Egypt beat Uganda 2-0 and top group A.

He has played 270 minutes in the 2019 AFCON till now and is yet to concede as he managed to keep three consecutive clean sheets.

Speaking after the game, El-Shennawy has emphasized the role the Egyptian fans played in winning the three group stage matches and qualifying to the round of 16, stating, “Our fans are the number one player on the field and not number 12.

“We find them in every match supporting us greatly, which is what drives us to win our matches.”

He added, “We need to maintain our good results until the end in order to win the championship, which is our clear goal.”

On the injury of teammate, Mahmoud Gennesh, El-Shennawy stated, “Gennesh is my brother, I have known him for 15 years. I wish him full recovery from his injury and I hope he returns back to play even better.”

Egypt secured Group A’s top spot with the full mark from three games. Their upcoming match will be in the round of 16 as they are set to face third-place teams from either Group C, D or E.
