OFFICIAL: Head coach Patrice Carteron's departs Zamalek by mutual consent

Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek have parted company with head coach Patrice Carteron following a run of poor results on the domestic and continental scenes.

Zamalek have been horrendous since the end of the Africa Cup of Nations, failing to win a single one of their last four games in the league and Champions League.

Meanwhile, in the Egyptian League Cup, the club managed to win just one of their five group games despite Carteron relying on a number of first-team players.

Overall, the club won only once in their last nine games, while suffering five defeats, the last of which came against Wydad Casablanca in match-day three of the CAF Champions League group-stages.

This result comes after back-to-back draws against Petro Luanda and Sagrada Esperanca, bringing their total tally to just two points, with three games left.

After falling out of favour with club president Mortada Mansour and the fans, Carteron’s future at Zamalek became uncertain as reports emerged linking him with a return to Saudi Arabia.

On Monday, Zamalek and Patrice Carteron have come to an agreement that the Frenchman’s contract in Cairo will terminate with immediate effect by mutual consent.

Carteron agreed to receive just one month of salary, believed to be around $110,000, instead of the full release clause which was supposed to be valued at $300,000.

Zamalek legend and former Egypt assistant coach Osama Nabih will take charge of the first-team on an interim basis until the club find a suitable replacement for Carteron

This becomes the second time Carteron has departed Zamalek in just one-year-and-a-half, having fleed the club for Saudi side Al Taawoun first in September 2020 before the CAF Champions League semi-finals.

Carteron has then returned back in March 2021 and managed to guide Zamalek to the 2021 Egyptian Premier League title, however, the team was knocked out of the 2021 CAF Champions League from the group-stages.

This season, the club finds themselves fourth on the league table, and on the brink of a back-to-back CAF Champions League group-stages exit.

Overall, Carteron guided the team in 45 games in his second spell, winning 28, drawing nine, while losing eight as he now set for a return to Saudi Arabia.
