The Algerian Football Federation has announced Thursday morning of their appointment of the former Man City player Djamel Belmadi as the national team’s new head coach.

The 42-year-old manager has taken over the Algerian national team from Rabah Madjer , after the federation sacked him in June, in a contract that extends till the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Madjer was previously appointed in his coaching role as the national team’s manager last October replacing the Spanish manager Lucas Alcaraz before getting sacked in the coming June.

Reports claim that the agreement between the Algerian Federation’s president, Kheiredine Zetchiwhose, and Belmadi came after a long period of negotiations in Paris as Belmadi’s acceptance came out on Wedensday 1 August before they signed the contract.

The former Southampton player represented the Algerian national team from 2000 to 2004, scoring five goals in 20 appearances, as well as captaining his country at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

As a coach, Belmadi was able to lead the Qatari side Al-Duhail to its second consecutive league title before being relieved off his duties in June.
