BREAKING: Algeria’s Mahrez wins 2016 PFA Player of the Year award

After a brilliant league campaign with Leicester City, Algeria international Riyad Mahrez has been voted by his peers as the 2016 PFA Player of the Year.

Hours after Leicester City edged even closer to a historic Premier League title win with a thumping 4-0 win at home to Swansea City, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez pipped teammate Jamie Vardy to the annual Player of the Year award, voted for by members of the Professional Footballers’ Association.

The 25-year-old, born in France to Algerian parents, has had an incredible 2015/16 season, scoring 17 goals and assisting 11 as the Foxes shocked the footballing world and climbed to the top of the English Premier League table.

Mahrez has also enjoyed a fine run of form with the Algerian national team this term; the winger has scored once and assisted an astonishing nine times for the Desert Foxes this term.

The Algerian becomes the first-ever African and Arab player to win the award.

Leicester’s final three fixtures are Manchester United (away), Everton (home) and Chelsea (away). Five points from those matches would be enough to seal a fairytale league win, in a time when traditionally wealthy clubs have dominated the top of European football.
