This week, Mohamed Salah joined the class of Egyptians who have scored a century of goals, for both club and country. Watch the best five of his 101 career goals.
AS Roma were knocked out of the Coppa Italia two nights ago by, crosstown rivals, Lazio on aggregate in a tense two-legged semi-final. The loss all but ended the Rome-based giants hopes of silverware this season having already been knocked out of the UEFA Europa League and also trailing Juventus in the league.
But behind the loss came another achievement for star player, Mohamed Salah. Salah, who has been in mercurial form for Roma since signing from Chelsea in 2015, scored 2 goals in the game allowing him to reach a milestone in his career, a milestone which only a handful of Egyptians have done in the past.
Salah reached 101 goals in his career. Astonishing, considering the fact that the majority of his goals so far have been in top European leagues since making the move into Europe via FC Basel in 2012. Today, we review Salah’s top five career goals so far for both club and country.
Egypt vs Zimbabwe 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – In a game filled with tension and drama, Egypt played away from home hoping to extend their unbeaten run in the second stage of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Salah would end up with a hat-trick in this match, with Egypt winning 2-4 in front of the oppositions fans, but Salah’s second goal was the stand out of the bunch. Receiving the ball just inside the Zimbabwean half, Salah set off on another trademark pacey run, bamboozling a defender with a nutmeg on the way. The defender tried desperately to track back and stop the goal, but Salah’s pace was too much. With a swift move the winger sped past and placed shot from the right side of the box in to the bottom left corner of the net.

Roma vs Sassuolo Serie A 2015/2016 – Many of Salah’s goal are tidy finishes after breaking through on goals with bursts of pace, but this one broke the trend. With Roma surprisingly trailing Sassuolo in the 49th minute of the tie, a moment of magic from Salah’s left foot bought the Giallorossi back level. An outswinging corner was headed back out by the Sassuolo defence to a waiting Salah, who was about 22 yards from goal. Striking the ball as it came out of the sky, Salah hit a sumptuous left-footed volley which swung away from the keepers outstretched hand and in to the bottom left corner of the net. A brilliant strike showcasing Salah’s technique.
Egypt vs Ghana 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations – The Pharaohs came oh so close to winning the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations. In a tournament where the Egyptian side scored only a few goals en route to the final, Salah’s free kick against Ghana was one of the standouts. In a crucial group stage game against African giants Ghana, Egypt were awarded a free kick in the 9th minute. With Salah and Abdallah Saied standing over the ball, everyone was expecting a curled shot over the wall on goal. Salah had different ideas though, blazing the ball through a tiny gap created by Egyptian player in the wall and into the top left corner of the net, leaving Ghanaian keeper Brimah Razak rooted to the spot. Egypt went on to win the game 1-0, cementing their position as group winners in the journey to the knockout phase.

Juventus vs Fiorentina Coppa Italia 1st Leg (2015) – Salah had an absolute blinder in his game, in which Fiorentina were clear underdogs against a rampant Juventus side. In the 11th minute, Juventus, who were on the attack, gained a corner. The corner was cleared by the Viola defence, with the ball falling at the feet of Salah deep in to his own half. With the Juventus defence stretched, Salah set off on a dazzling run, combining his electric pace with skill. The Egyptian beat one, then beat a second and even a third before blasting the ball in to the top left corner of the net, leaving Juventus keeper Neto with absolutely no chance of saving the strike. A brilliant solo goal which left the home crowd stunned.
Roma vs Palermo Serie A 2015/2016 – Voted Roma’s goal of the season for the 2015/2016 campaign, is Salah’s cheeky effort against Palermo. Up 3-0 at the time and controlling the game, Radja Nainnggolan set off down the left wing for Roma. Speeding up on the right wing was Salah, and the Belgian found the Egyptian with a great ball across the box. Salah however didn’t manage to get a clean touch and the ball sped away from goal. The keeper came to close down the angle but Salah got a vital touch past him and from the by-line curled home a freakish strike which sent the home crowd into raptures.

At the tender age of 24, Salah has forged his name into Egyptian footballing history. The winger is known worldwide, synonymous with pace and skill and is a tough opponent to come up against (just ask former employers Chelsea). Now sitting on 101 career goals, we hope to see the man many Roma fans call “Momo” hit more career milestones.
