Qatari giants Al-Gharafa beat Celtic to signing of Southampton defender Lyanco

Qatari outfit Al-Gharafa have announced the signing of Brazilian defender Lyanco from Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

Lyanco, 26, has been playing in England for Southampton since August of 2021 when he joined from Torino for a fee of 7.5 million.

Last season, Lyanco made 21 Premier League appearances in which he scored once and provided one assist; however, he couldn’t help the Saints avoid relegation to the EFL Championship.

Having been an unused substitute in the club’s opening three league games this season, Lyanco has been linked with moves to several clubs, including Besiktas and Scottish giants Celtic.

According to reports, Lyanco was one of the names on Brendan Rodgers’ shortlist who was keen to provide cover for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki, and Stephen Welsh.

However, unexpectedly, Lyanco arrived in Qatar last night to join Al-Gharafa, who went on to announce the deal on social media.

The Qatari giants had a busy summer which saw Senegalese wonderkid Seydou Sano join from Sporting Braga alongside Tunisia international Ferjani Sassi, and Ivorian forward Yohan Boli.

A former Brazil U23 international, Lyanco also had spells with Brazilian clubs Botafogo and São Paulo, before moving to Italy to play for Torino and Bologna.
