Pharaohs abroad weekend recap

King Fut recap the Egyptians who featured for their overseas clubs during this busy weekend of football.

Ahmed Elmohamady

The English Premier League season kicked off yesterday and Ahmed Elmohamady traveled to London with Sunderland to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Elmo replaced Fraizer Campbell at the 68th minute, shortly after new signing Louis Saha came on. He added a strong aerial presence, made a few runs down the right flank, earned a few throw ins and made a couple key interceptions. Essentially helping to relieve pressure off Sunderland as Arsenal were desperate to score in the dying minutes of the game. Sunderland held on to a massive away point as the match ended 0-0. The excellent Sunderland AFC blog The Rocker Report rated Elmo’s performance 7/10, the highest out of the substitutes for the Black Cats.

Adam El-Abd

The npower Championship also started this weekend in England and we had our eyes on Adam El-Abd’s Brighton take on Egyptian-owned Hull City. El-Abd, a recent Egypt international, played 90 minutes at centre-back for Brighton & Hove Albion, who were unlucky to lose 1-0 against Hull in their opening league game. El-Abd told Brighton’s official website, “We looked solid for a lot of the game and we limited them to few chances from range, and we created some decent chances ourselves as well.”

Jay Simpson scored the goal for Steve Bruce’s side in the 85th minute after coming on as a substitute. Click here for a full match report.

Mido

Mido is approximately 4 weeks away from recovering from a hamstring injury, after pulling it during preseason, but his club Barnsley still managed to win 1-0 against his former club Middlesbrough. Click here for a full match report.

Ahmed Hegazy

Egypt Olympic centre-back Ahmed Hegazy was himself surprised to be included in Fiorentina’s squad that faced Novara in the Coppa Italia yesterday, as he’s recently been nursing a thigh injury. Despite winning the fitness battle, Hegazy remained an unused sub as his side beat Novara 2-0 thanks to goals from Adem Ljajic and Manuel Pasqual. Fiorentina advance to the fourth round of the Cup where they will face the winners of Juve Stabia-Sampdoria on November 28.

Hegazy made his debut for Fiorentina this week, playing 30 minutes in a friendly against Viareggiobut has yet to make his official debut for the Viola.

Highlights of Fiorentina 2-0 Novara:

Mohamed Salah

In Switzerland, the increasingly impressive Mohamed Salah scored his first goal for the club, and assisted the other as FC Basel beat FC Lausanne-Sport 2-0. Watch Salah’s wonderful performance here.

Lierse trio

Egypt international trio Ahmed Samir Farag, Ahmed Saied ‘Okka’ and Mohamed ‘Dodo’ Elgabas picked up a third point from three games with Egyptian-owned Lierse SK as they hosted Belgian giants Genk. Farag and Okka started for the fourth consecutive week in the Jupiler Pro League alongside former Zamalek midfielder Hussein Yasser. The Egyptian defensive duo combined well to hold Genk to a 1-1 draw. Dodo hit the post a minute after coming off the bench (82′) and minutes later Nigerian-born Jason Adesanya scored the equalizer for Lierse.

Amr Zaki

Former Wigan hitman Amr Zaki, who’s recently signed for newly-promoted Elazığspor in Turkey, wasn’t in the side that drew 1-1 with Turkish giants Fenerbahce in their Super Lig opener.

Elazığspor opened the scoring through Cameroon international Herve Tum, while Dirk Kuyt scored the equalizer for the Yellow Canaries shortly after. Click here for a full match report.

Essam El Hadary

Finally, Egypt number one Essam El Hadary was in between the sticks for Al Merreikh in a fierce Sudanese derby against Al Hilal in the African Confederation Cup.

Hadary made a few superb saves for 10-men Merreikh but had no chance of stopping Hilal from equalizing after this spectacular volley from Zimbabwean Edward Sadomba:
