Ali Maaloul’s Tunisia suffer shocking AFCON defeat to Namibia

Tunisia have suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Namibia in their opening game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday.

The Eagles of Carthage had a promising first half despite Namibia getting a couple of chances on the break to open the scoring.

Head coach Jalal Kadri made a notable change at half-time bringing on Union Berlin’s Aïssa Laïdouni to bolster their offensive play.

However, Namibia still looked more threatening in quick counter attacks led by Mamelodi Sundowns ace Peter Shalulile.

Their perseverance paid off in the 88th minute as they took a shocking lead through a bullet header from an unmarked Deon Hotto Kavendji at the far post.

The result marked a worrying start for Tunisia who take on Mali next in the second round of the competition’s group stages on Saturday, January 20th.
