Mourinho 'surprised' by Egypt's early AFCON exit

Portuguese coach Ricardo Formosinho, former manager of Modern Future, shared insights into his compatriot Jose Mourinho’s reaction to Egypt’s performance in the 2023 AFCON.

Ricardo Formosinho was sacked as the manager of Modern Future a few weeks ago after just 19 games despite guiding the club to the Egyptian Super Cup final.

During an appearance on the Al Hayah TV channel, Formosinho expressed his astonishment at Egypt’s elimination from the tournament, while also emphasizing the strength of Egyptian football and its talented players.

Formosinho said: “I don’t know how Egypt appeared in this manner because they have many talented players.

“Although Rui Vitória is an outstanding coach, football sometimes presents surprises.”

Reflecting on the coaching situation, Formosinho stated: “I have followed Hossam Hassan’s tenure as the Egyptian national team coach. I don’t know him as a coach, but I know he was a great player. I don’t anticipate what he will do with the team.”

He also shared Mourinho’s perspective on Egypt’s AFCON campaign, saying: “Mourinho was surprised by what happened to Egypt in the AFCON.

“He closely follows football globally, including in Egypt, and tells me he admires some players there.”

Formosinho was the assistant manager to José Mourinho at Manchester United and Tottenham, working with him in 179 games between both clubs from 2016 to 2020.
