Zamalek head coach José Gomes expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Abu Salem SC in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Zamalek defeated Abu Salem with a 2-1 score in the fifth round of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage at the “19 May 1956” stadium in the Algerian city of Annaba.
Gomes said during the press conference: “I am happy with the team’s performance in the first half, in football, you must finish the game when you have the chance.
“We knew that Abu Salem are strong in set pieces and long throws, and we created chances in the second half and there was confusion for us in the final minutes.
“I am happy with our ability to create many scoring opportunities, especially in the first half, and we wasted many chances. This happened before against Ismaily in the league, and we need to rectify the situation.
“Our performance declined in the second half and I take responsibility for that because I made 4 substitutions at once, and this takes time for players to get into the rhythm of the game.”
“In the upcoming stages, we will face stronger opponents and we need to focus more and not waste these chances,” Gomes concluded.
With this win, the White Knights raised their tally to 13 points at the top of Group B standings, while Abu Salem of Libya’s tally stopped at nine points in second place.
