Al Ahly have today cancelled their friendly match against UEFA Europa League champions Atlético Madrid on July 25 due to their busy CAF Champions League schedule.
Al Ahly initially postponed this friendly against Atlético Madrid yesterday, which was only announced on the Reds’ website the day before, but have now confirmed its cancellation.
Ahly would’ve been without influential trio Abou-Treika, Ahmed Fathi and Emad Meteb, as they’re headed to the London Olympics.
Three days before this proposed visit to Madrid, Ahly will face Cairo rivals Zamalek in the CAF Champions League group stage. This busy schedule forced Al Ahly to unsurprisingly call off their visit to Madrid.
The Egyptian giants previously lost 2-0 against Espanyol in Barcelona in May .
Atlético visited Egypt almost a year ago where they faced Zamalek to mark the Cairo clubs’ centennial celebrations. Zamalek lost 4-1 with Eduardo Salvio and Diego each scoring a brace, Mido’s penalty was a slight consolation.
