TP Mazembe head coach Lamine N’Diaye has lashed out at the referee following his side’s defeat at Al Ahly in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The Red Devils booked their spot in the CAF Champions League final for the 17th time in the club’s history after defeating Mazembe 3-0 on aggregate.
Despite a fiery start to the second leg, Al Ahly left it late and struck three times through Mohamed Abdelmonem, Wessam Abou Ali, and Akram Tawfik.
However, it could have been a different story if referee Peter Waweru hadn’t ruled out Joel Beya’s opener in the 57th minute after consulting the VAR on a handball on the Congolese striker.
Speaking on the refereeing performance, Mazembe boss Lamine N’Diaye said: “We must talk about it; we lost by three goals, which angers me.
“I am frustrated because I know well that we are in Africa; if we want to progress, the referees must be serious and better than that.
“The game was one-sided regarding refereeing, and I know well that we are human and can make mistakes, but I am frustrated, and this affected us and our focus.
“The referee played a negative role in this match, and Al Ahly does not need that,” he added.
Al Ahly have now secured their spot in the CAF Champions League final for a fifth year in a row where they will be meeting up with Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
