Burkina Faso parts ways with Hubert Velud after AFCON exit

The Burkinabe Football Federation (FBF) announced on Friday its separation from French coach Hubert Velud by mutual agreement.

Burkina Faso are looking for a new coach as the FBF officially announced the departure of French coach Hubert Velud. The Stallions were beaten 2-1 by Mali in a tense knockout tie after finishing second in Group D behind Angola.

In a statement, the FBF said its executive committee “noted that results fell short of the expectations of the Burkinabe people” and reassured fans of its “desire to continue to ensure that the national flag is raised at the highest level in future events”.

“To do this, it is undeniable that the management [of the Stallions], observed during this Nations Cup is out of phase with the ambitions of the executive committee,” the FBF statement added.

Burkina Faso’s campaign in the AFCON 2023 started with a victory over Mauritania followed by a draw against Algeria. Losses to Angola and Mali ended Burkina Faso’s hopes of advancing further in the competition.

Burkina Faso are currently third with 4 points in Group A’s World Cup qualifiers, whereas Egypt leads with 6 points.

They are tied in points with Guinea-Bissau, who are in second place and are only behind them on goal difference. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s tally remains at 1 point, placing them in fifth and last position.

The focus now shifts to identifying a coaching team for the upcoming 2025 AFCON and 2026 FIFA World Cup.
