Sam Morsy: I want to play for Egypt again

Sam Morsy is hoping that playing in the Premier League will earn him a return to the Egypt national team setup under Hossam Hassan.

The Ipswich Town skipper hasn’t had an international call-up since September 2023 under former boss Rui Vitoria, when he played just four minutes against Tunisia in an international friendly.

New manager Hossam Hassan has left Morsy out of his latest squad to face Cape Verde and Botswana in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers despite the player making it to the Premier League.

The 32-year-old midfielder knows his best chance of a recall to Hossam Hassan’s side is to prove his worth in the top flight against some of the world’s best players.

“There’s not a better league in world football to show what I can do,” said Morsy, who led Ipswich to successive promotions from League One to the Premier League.

“If I can do well at this level, it will probably be quite hard for the Egypt manager to leave me out. Of course, I want to play for Egypt again — that’s always my ambition.

“Of course, it’s a dream to play in the next World Cup. I played in the 2018 one and it was a really proud moment and I’d love to get the opportunity again.

“But there’s a lot of time and a lot of work to get there. I will keep working hard and see what happens.”

Morsy was part of the Egypt team at the 2018 World Cup, playing the Pharaoh’s opening game against Uruguay in Russia.
