Al Ahly’s El-Khatib blames bad results on congested league fixtures

Al Ahly president Mahmoud El-Khatib believes the club’s poor run of form is down to the scheduling of the Egyptian Premier League fixtures.

The Red Devils have been on a downward spiral since May as they are currently third in the Egyptian Premier League table.

Portuguese manager Ricardo Soares was brought in to replace Mosimane but Al Ahly’s form has not improved since his arrival.

Their most recent draw against 10-man Pharco FC put them 13 points behind arch-rivals Zamalek, who are close to securing their second consecutive league title with just five games left.

Additionally, Soares’ side have been struggling with a number of players out with injury as they have failed to score a single goal in their last seven games.

“Al Ahly fans are the club’s first line of support in victory and defeat, and even in such difficult times, I still feel their support, and this bears a greater responsibility for me,” El-Khatib told Al Ahly TV.

“We acknowledge that mistakes were made and that can happen, but I think the problem is when you turn a blind eye to mistakes, and we know as officials how to deal with them.

“We must bear the negative reaction and grief from fans in difficult times just as we rejoice to their support during times of victory.

“When we formed the current team, we were looking for a side that could win the CAF Champions League, a title the club haven’t won for seven years.

“And we managed to reach the Champions League final five times in six years, which is an unprecedented achievement.

“To win back-to-back Champions League titles is also a historic achievement, but we could not make it three in a row unfortunately with the help of some people from Egypt.

“Al Ahly won 12 titles in the last four years, whether domestic or continental titles, and a bronze medal in the Club World Cup, and this is something that no club in the world has achieved.

“The current squad has the same players who were playing the final of the CAF Champions League and achieved third place in the Club World Cup months ago, so what happened to them?

“These are the same players who are physically and mentally stressed after reaching the top in the few past seasons.

“We were expecting a drop in the team’s performance. We found it very difficult to create new motivations for the players after playing every possible game in three successive seasons without any kind of rest,” he added.
